A day on Spaccanapoli: a walking itinerary through the historic centre of Naples

Veduta dall'alto del centro storico di Napoli

Spaccanapoli is the straight street that cuts the historic centre of Naples in two, and you can walk it in a few hours. Here is an itinerary in order, designed for those who have just one day.

Morning: Santa Chiara and Gesù Nuovo

You start from Piazza del Gesù Nuovo, with the church whose façade is covered in diamond points. Next to it is the Santa Chiara Monastery, with its cloister covered in majolica tiles: it is one of the most beautiful and peaceful places in the city. Those staying at Donna Luisa, Chicca and POP can walk there in a few minutes.

Towards San Domenico Maggiore and the Cappella Sansevero

Continuing along Spaccanapoli you reach Piazza San Domenico Maggiore. A few steps away is the Cappella Sansevero, famous for the Veiled Christ: it is best to book your entrance in advance and check up-to-date opening hours and prices on the official website.

Lunch and Via dei Tribunali

At midday you can move to Via dei Tribunali, the street of the historic pizzerias, or stop for a taste of fried pizza or a cuoppo. For dishes to try, there is the Naples guide.

Afternoon: San Gregorio Armeno and the Duomo

Further north, Via San Gregorio Armeno is the street of the nativity scenes, with craft workshops open all year round. From there you reach the Duomo of Naples, with the treasure chapel of San Gennaro. In the area there is SanGregoRooms, and a couple of steps from the Duomo GuestHouse Marcanto Duomo.

Evening: a trip to Underground Naples

Those with energy left can finish with a visit to Underground Naples, or with an evening stroll through the alleys. The whole itinerary is done on foot, in comfortable shoes: the lava-stone paving slabs are smooth and uneven.
